Ellen Kramer, our Course Director, will introduce you to what the college stands for and how it can help you become a successful Homeopathic practitioner.

Dear Tessa, I thoroughly enjoyed my day on Saturday visiting the college. I left before saying thank you very much to you and everyone especially Ellen for making us so welcome. I am particularly pleased that I stayed on to sit in on some of the afternoon lecture and found the information in that hour so easy to understand and absolutely riveting. I just want to learn more! Please thank staff and students alike for their kindness and interest and I look forward to hopefully meeting you again in the near future.

~With Best Wishes, Edwina Moore, UK

Description:

Seminar is Led by: Thierry Clerc, LCPH MARH

Apply simple and proven marketing & sales rules, to make your practice successful. And enjoy the results: a busy practice with happy customers!

This course will provide you with a basic understanding on how to set up a commercial strategy, transforming prospects into customers and making your customers happy. This is a very interactive course, which will cover marketing theory and sales technique, and focus on how to apply them to your specific skills and market.

Bring with you three types of your ideal customers – the ones you would like to see every day, and any information/pictures/data, you have about them!

The day will cover:

- Introduction & Course Objectives

- Commercial strategy – Definitions and examples

- Do you know what works and what does not?

- Building Value: Setting your marketing strategy to attract your ideal customers

- Sales Process: what is it? How to successfully turn prospects into customers?

- Pricing Strategy & Value

- Action Plan

There are very few people who are complementary therapists and knowledgeable about marketing techniques. Thierry Clerc is one of them and we are very privileged to have him share his knowledge with us. If you are interested in developing your practice, this is a day not to be missed!

Thierry Clerc - Prior to studying homeopathy, Thierry Clerc, LCPH MARH held various senior sales management positions in the technology sector where he dealt with multi-million contracts with blue-chips such as Orange, Nokia and Panasonic. He also holds an MBA from ESCP Europe.

When becoming a full-time health practitioner, he faced the issue of selling himself, without the support of a large corporation. However, by applying very simple and effective techniques that he learnt during his career, he has managed to beat the crisis blues, and get a fully booked agenda.

Without an understanding of the innate principals of healing that every living organism uses to heal, adapt and survive, theories and practices on health are flawed. The Principles of Healing that Hahnemann promotes throughout the Organon (the homeopathic bible on healing) simply boils down to this:

find the cause of why the body is producing the symptoms,

remove any obstacles to cure in order to support it to do what it does best heal itself.

(CAUSE ~> Effects ~> AND obstacles to cure.)

I use this to evaluate all that I do as a homeopath to assess what techniques and tools I need to use in order to support the healing process of my patients. Hahnemann was one of the first medical practitioners to understand that the power of healing lies within and not outside the patient. He called this the ‘vital force’ of the patient. Sadly few people wanted to listen and Allopathy followed its own path away from health into sickness.

Today, we have all been indoctrinated to believe in the germ theory of disease. This ‘theory’ is that disease is the direct consequence of germs or viruses that pass from one host to another and that ‘Healing’ requires some powerful external intervention by experts. It also implies that illness is not our responsibility but something that happens to us.

As a result we no longer have to take responsibility for our own health and can ignore the underlying cause of much of our dis-ease state – Mental/Emotional, diet, nutrition, pollution both inner and outer. Instead, we blame germs and this effectively shifts our personal responsibility for health and well-being onto the shoulders of the medical profession – the experts – who supposedly know how to kill off the offending germs. (Xxx kills 99% of all known Germs!).

The practice of killing germs with drugs has resulted in a huge increase in iatrogenic (medically-induced) disease and a further degeneration of health. Various programmes instituted to confer ‘immunity’ against specific germs by way of vaccines, immunisations and serums have had severe long term effects on the health of the general population.

The Germ Theory has had a major impact on developments in both medicine and on public health. However there are major scientific flaws in the basic theory. It is important for alternative practitioners to be able to question assumptions and so called ‘scientific’ medicine as very little of it is genuinely scientific.

In 1861 the French chemist Louis Pasteur linked germs and disease and used this to develop theories to explain diseases such as Cholera and Syphilis that always plagued humanity. He fathered “The Science of Bacteriology” and “The Germ Theory of Disease Causation” by demonstrating the existence of various micro-organisms—and concluding that these germs cause pathogenic changes in living cultures within the laboratory setting.

Pasteur was a chemist and physicist and knew very little about biological processes or health and healing. A respected, influential and charismatic man, whose phobic fear of infection and belief in the “malignancy and belligerence” of germs had popular far-reaching consequences in the scientific community which was convinced of the threat of the microbe to man. Thus was born the fear of germs which still exists today (bacteriophobia).

Pasteur’s original Germ Theory of Disease Causation states that:

‘diseases are due solely to invasion by specific aggressive micro-organisms. A specific germ is responsible for each disease, and micro-organisms are capable of reproduction and transportation outside of the body’.

Pasteur’s discovery of Germ Theory was significant in medical history because:

The public health crises of the 19th century were partly caused by ignorance of the real causes of the epidemics that swept acrossEurope. Even though campaigners were able to show the link between poverty, dirty drinking water and cholera outbreaks, they lacked the scientific proof to back up their theories.

Public Health measures were taken in Britain after 1871 (partly as a result of the discovery of Germ Theory. This forced councils to provide clean drinking water supplies and to remove sewage and rubbish from streets. This and subsequent acts revolutionised the health of Britons living in cities.

It led to a new era of ‘scientific’ based exploration of disease that continues today. The germs believed to cause Leprosy, Diphtheria, Cholera and the Bubonic Plague were all discovered in this period. This led to the creation of vaccines to prevent people from contracting the disease. These discoveries allowed doctors to treat patients for illnesses that had been fatal for thousands of years.

This ‘scientific’ approach has had a major impact on developments in surgery and in drugs. The development of vaccinations and the concept of the ‘magic’ bullet such as penicillin and sulphonamides that could kill disease causing bacteria inside of the body was developed for human use and this concept still drive most medical research today.

Many ideas on disease and illness before Germ Theory were actually little more than common sense or guesswork. However the ‘science of medicine has become the new ‘religion’, and this is has led to a very twisted version of ‘medicine’ with any detractors from the religion of ‘science’ being seen as the new ‘heretics or quacks’.

Once Pasteur had made his discovery approaches to health was changed forever, but with only some of those changes being beneficial in the long run (sanitation and water engineers were more effective than Doctors – prevention better than cure!).

By the 1870s, the medical profession had fully adopted the germ theory and the repercussions of this on our approaches to health and sickness continues today. The advent of the microscope made it possible to see, differentiate and categorise the organisms. Invading microbes were now seen as the cause of disease.

A whole new era of modern ‘health’ practice has been developed including sterilisation, pasteurisation, avoidance of eating raw food and medical practices such as compulsory vaccinations of mass populations. (With the deprivation of raw foods, an inevitable deterioration of health ensued).

Objections to the validity of the Germ Theory

The germ theory was founded on a number of scientifically unproved assumptions (e.g. disease germs are specific, unchangeable entities in their biological structure and chemical characteristics). Many eminent people reject the validity of the germ theory and maintain that the general condition of the body is the principal factor in disease.

‘Bacteria do not cause disease; they are present because of it’.

Around 1880, Pasteur changed his theory. He had concluded that germs were “ordinarily kept within bounds by natural laws, but when conditions change, when its virulence is exalted, when its host is enfeebled, the germ is able to invade the territory which was previously barred to it.” This is the premise that a healthy body is resistant and not susceptible to disease. Pasteur discovered that microbial species can undergo many transformations. These facts were not consistent with his germ theory and destroyed its very basis. However, for various reasons medical ‘science’ has succeeded in keeping the public ignorant of the true nature of disease.

Claude Bernard (1813-1878) disputed the validity of the germ theory and maintained that the general condition of the body is the principal factor in disease, but this idea was largely ignored by the medical profession and the general public. The germ theory was founded on the assumption that disease germs are specific, unchangeable entities in their biological structure and chemical characteristics.

We now know that any bacteria can modify and adapt its structure and metabolic function in accordance with its changing environment. The virulence of germs can likewise be altered in the laboratory at will by the technician.

Modern medical science is struggling with the ability of bacteria and viruses to mutate rapidly and override any intervention which suggests that the continued pursuit of stronger and stronger drug intervention merely leads to stronger and stronger germs. (They can adapt much quicker than we can and this increasingly leads to the potential for a doomsday scenario).

The emphasis on the destruction of bacteria etc by drugs and vaccines puts the emphasis on sickness rather than health. This leads not only to the proliferation of diseases but also appears to add to both the toxicity of the hosts and their environment in a way that causes longer term damage. Our own personal health has slipped from our control.

The Concepts of ‘Susceptibility’ and ‘Resistance’

Everyone has literally trillions of fungi, bacteria and viruses in their body even when healthy. When physicians are confronted with this, they say that disease is not caused by these agencies because “you are not susceptible’ or because “your resistance is high’. The supposed contagious agents—bacteria, viruses and fungi—do not cause disease. The actual cause is whatever causes susceptibility or low resistance!

If we can maintain our body in a clean, healthy state then germs are irrelevant, for susceptibility does not exist. This leads us to the fact that that an unclean environment is really the cause of disease—for if germs were the cause of disease, everyone exposed to the harmful germ would become sick with the same illness

Susceptible individuals are those with a high degree of body toxicity and sufficient vitality to conduct the disease/purification process. When such sufficient vitality is waning, organic tissue damage occurs from the extraordinarily polluted internal state of the body which creates the foundation for chronic disease So long as our body is relatively pure, however, waste materials do not accumulate and the scavenging assistance of bacterial germs is not called upon.

The Medical Pharmaceutical Industry

The growth of a very powerful medical-pharmaceutical industry began with the search for the perfect drug to combat each disease-causing microbe. This has adversely affected all national health systems as it is skewed towards long term sickness and huge profits for the drug companies.

The practice of killing germs with drugs was also initiated, resulting in iatrogenic (medically-induced) disease and further degeneration of health. Various programmes were instituted to confer ‘immunity’ against specific germs by way of vaccines and serums, with horrendous long term effects.

The Homeopathic Perspective

Homeopaths and other CAM professionals accept the fact that germs, bacteria and virus exist but reject the idea that they are the primary causes of disease. They see them primarily as part of the symptoms of an unhealthy body state, lifestyle and environment.

These organisms exist everywhere and are essential to the maintenance of life on earth. However the emphasis on the destruction of bacteria etc by drugs and vaccines puts the emphasis on the wrong side and leads not only to the proliferation of diseases but also appears to add to both the toxicity of the hosts and their environment in a way that causes longer term damage.

CAM professionals should combine to lobby for moving away from the current ‘sickness’ based focus looking for the magic pills of drugs and surgery to a ‘health’ perspective with a focus on providing:

a) a healthy physically external environment

clean air

unpolluted water and food

proper sanitation and waste facilities

reasonable housing

b) a healthy internal body environment

sufficient diet and nutrition

mental and emotional wellbeing

spiritual, mental and physical cleanliness

c) health practices that support the bodies innate abilities to protect itself. The focus should be on prevention as above and by stimulating the body’s own vitality/immune system to overcome the deficiencies in the environments as described above.

Given that a) and b) above are under increasing threat it is clear that the CAM will have a growing market of sick people to deal with and a battle to fight to link health with life styles, environment in a way that is not currently happening at any major level. There is leading to a revival of more natural approaches to health and this is reflected by the growth of the CAM sector.

Dealing With Back Pain

By Ellen Kramer (MCPH)

Homeopaths will often see clients suffering from back pain as part of their presenting symptoms, or as secondary symptom as the homeopathic treatment progresses. Musculoskeletal problems are one of the most frequent and disabling conditions affecting 80% of people at some point in their lives. Poor posture is a primary contributing factor to this problem as when the lower back is held for prolonged periods in an arched position; stress and strain is placed on the discs jamming the small joints of the spine together causing inflammation. Muscle tension, lifting badly, poor diet and nutrition further weaken the tissue that supports the vertebrae. The lumber region is the one of the main areas for gradual thinning and deterioration of the discs (arthritis is often associated with this thinning). The neurological connections of the spine to the all the internal organs, especially the liver, uterus, kidney etc have a reflex impact on the lower back, while nerve compression in the spine can have far reaching effects on the function and health of related organs. With acute symptoms there is extreme pain, spasms, and possible nerve pressure.

The common allopathic treatment tends to be physiotherapy, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents and local corticosteroid injections, with surgery in more extreme cases which all have limited effectiveness. Any long term drug use or surgery can cause more problems than they cure and clients often come to see a homeopath as a last resort especially for acute back pain for which there many therapeutic remedies from Arnica, Bryonia, Rhus- tox, Ruta etc…

It is very important to establish the causes of your client’s symptoms as therapeutic remedies will not hold if they are not prescribed within the context of the cause of the symptoms. Taking a time line helps the homeopath to see if there has been a history of physical traumas, emotional shock or toxicity as a result of drug use. It is important to address these as they can have a major impact on the body and may act as a block to the indicated remedy. Clients may have to treat on two levels, on an acute level for the pain, (as this can often prevents the client from healing on a chronic level) and then on a chronic level bearing in mind the cause of the symptoms.

From an energetic perspective, (using the Chinese five elements model), the musculo-skeletal system is seen as being governed by the kidneys and liver energy. The kidneys store Jing, which is seen as the root of vital energy and the source of life and support the development and repair of bones. Disharmony and insufficient storage of Jing leads to weak legs and knees, brittle bones or stiffness of the spine. The kidneys are also considered to be particularly concerned with fear connected to relationships, unexpressed grief or emotional insecurity. Emotionally this is considered to be a condition that is about resentment, feeling victimized, bitterness and lacking in love.

If there are clear aetiologies for physical traumas or emotional shock in their time line, one can treat these first before going onto a detox program particularly if they have a history of allopathic drug use. Coming off the synthetic hormones/cortisone and other drugs as soon as practically possible will ease the load on the liver. Remember that weaning people of steroids takes time and should be done very gently, step by step, with help from their GP. Whilst doing the detox program it is useful to use herbal tinctures to support the liver, spleen and lymphatic system. Homeopathic remedies can support clients with acute pain, stimulate the body to repair damage and promote changes in patterns of tension and stress. Prevention is better than cure so exercise is helpful with postural changes and this is a good time to consider referral to or joint working with other alternative practitioners – from body workers to psychotherapy.

CAM Practitioners & The Use Of Homeopathy

By Ellen Kramer (MCPH)

Most CAM Practitioners are interested in health, in helping people who often come with multiple presenting symptoms, and in having a range of skills that will support them in providing a high level of service for clients. Homeopathy is a discipline and a profession that many CAM practitioners feel drawn too, and it is an increasingly attractive add on therapy that can complement existing skills.

Homeopathy comes from the Greek words homoios (similar) and pathos (suffering). The founding father of homeopathy was Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), who formulated the ‘principle of similarity’, which states that a given substance can cure in a diseased person the symptoms that it produces or causes in a healthy person. It is a well-documented, scientifically based system of approaching health and disease with over 250 years of empirical research behind it.

Homeopaths, as with most CAM practitioners approach their clients in a holistic way, meaning that the whole of the body and spirit is dealt with, not just the localised disease. It is a safe, effective and gentle approach to health and provides an alternative to drugs and surgery, helping patients to avoid or deal with the often severe side effects of allopathic treatment programmes, or as a complementary approach, working alongside other complementary or medical treatment programmes. Many homeopaths have started to practise after personal experience of the benefits of homeopathy. Some are qualified healthcare professionals who decide to practise outside conventional medicine. However savvy practitioners also want to gain a recognised qualification that will enable them to enhance their practice, enable them to join an appropriate professional register and include the new skills in their insurance portfolio.

To find out what draws therapists to homeopathy I asked a variety of practitioners what attracted them to study homeopathy in addition to their existing practices.

Sheba Salto – a successful Craniosacral therapist working in Marlow and Twickenham had this to say about becoming a homeopath

‘As a Craniosacral therapist I find that what I do helps people in two ways. One is structurally helping the body to realign or to release tension from muscles or organs so that the body can function optimally; the other is an emotional or mental release of past trauma or confusion. By adding Homeopathy to the Craniosacral work I can better help in acute cases of sickness like fever, flu, stomach bugs, etc. It also works to build up the body’s natural vitality and therefore can help in long standing diseases. To me these therapies are totally complementary and with both I definitely have a wider scope’.

Massage therapist,Yoko Suzuki, who works at the Qetesh Spa in Battersea is in the second year of our two year full time course feels that she has already benefited by combining both of these therapies. She is finding how compatible they are and already noticing benefits in working with clients who are generally feeling run down, have skin disorders, nervous disorders or even tumors.

Reiki practitioner Samantha Nelson -Kirwan has started studying Homeopathy on our part time course as an adjunct to her Reiki, feels they both work on a similar level in that they assist the individual in healing themselves as a whole on the emotional, spiritual, physical and mental level.

Dr Anjali Hariharan (BHMS,ND) is an experienced practitioner at Healthworks in East London who uses Reflexology, Reiki, Naturopathy and Yoga. She feels that homeopathic treatment speeds up the beneficial aspects of the other treatments and this allows clients to regain balance faster. Specifically in terms of yoga she finds lots of people have need for more support when starting and practicing yoga, particularly when they have pre-existing conditions. Homeopathic remedies can help with muscle recovery and relaxation after physical workout sessions

With reflexology she finds when she has identified areas low in energy, the use of gentle homeopathic remedies supports the process of rebalancing, and this adds to the effectiveness of sessions. For example when working with a client who was having a problem conceiving, reflexology treatment identified low energy in the liver area, (by prescribing the remedy chelidomium this was resolved and the client conceived within three months).

As a Naturopathic Doctor she frequently meets clients who want to avoid or come off allopathic drug treatment due to the serious side effects. One client with severe acne was happy to try herbal supplements and she supported this with a homeopathic remedy (psorinum) which speeded up the process of de-toxification and helped to clear the skin.

Becoming a successful alternative health practitioner entails developing an alternative perspective on health and this is something that can best be learnt from a vocational training that fits in and supports their already busy lives i.e. one that has a career-specific, flexible, practical and skills-focused approach. MostCAMpractitioners treat people with a wide range of medical conditions. They take a ‘holistic’ approach – looking at the individual’s life as a whole, rather than just their physical symptoms. They already have skills such as:

meeting patients and asking questions about their condition and their wider lives

advising on diet and other lifestyle factors

monitoring the patient’s progress, through phone calls, email or further consultation

keeping patient records

advertising and publicising the practice, perhaps through talks or seminars

managing the business accounts

keeping up to date with developments in theCAMsector

A well run course should enhance the practitioners ability to thoroughly analyse a case and show how homeopathy can complement and supplement existing patient treatment programmes. Practitioners will leave with an enhanced ability to appropriately support clients with homeopathic remedies and herbs and an understanding of the importance of nutrition to help in their existing treatment programmes. At CPH our emphasis is on practical application and in further developing the skills people come with.

What do homeopaths do?

Homeopathy is both a complementary and alternative medicine. Around 3,500 homeopaths practise in the UK. The profile of homeopathy is rising and so opportunities are growing. As more and more people are becoming disillusioned with modern medicine approaches there is a constantly growing demand for safer alternatives to the drug and surgery based approaches. NHS clinics can now offer homeopathy alongside traditional treatments. There are also NHS Homeopathic Hospitals in London and Edinburgh.

However most homeopaths run their own practices

Homeopaths treat people with a wide range of medical conditions. They take a ‘holistic’ approach – looking at the individual’s life as a whole, rather than just their physical symptoms. Clients come for help with a wide variety of complaints – from relatively minor conditions, e.g. headache, toothache or insomnia, to potentially more serious illnesses, e.g. asthma or arthritis. The job entails:

meeting patients and asking questions about their condition and their wider lives

choosing the most appropriate method of applying homeopathy.

choosing a remedy most likely to work for each patient – either a one-off remedy or a course of treatment

explaining how to take and store the remedy supplied

advising on diet and other lifestyle factors

monitoring the patient’s progress, through phone calls, email or further consultation

keeping patient records

advertising and publicising the practice, perhaps through talks or seminars

managing the business accounts

keeping up to date with developments in homeopathy and other health issues.

Homeopathy is a demanding occupation. The holistic nature of treatment means clients may confide personal and emotional problems. Building up a practice, usually through word of mouth, can be an interesting and challenging process. Some practitioners complement their work by offering other therapies, such as massage, aromatherapy, acupuncture, kinesiology or nutrition.

Hours and working environment

Almost all homeopaths are self employed and run their own practice. This may be from their homes, or within a clinic as part of a wider alternative therapy practice. They may also visit patients at home. Increasingly there are opportunities available in GP surgeries or hospitals as the Government has increased the funding for complementary therapies.

Although Homeopaths may need to offer appointments in the evenings and weekends for their clients’ convenience it is increasingly accepted to deal with clients over the phone and by email and this really enhances the flexibility for homeopaths to create their own lifestyle. Each homeopath will decide what the most appropriate hours to run their business are and this varies according to personal circumstances.

It is a very flexible career option. It can be started later in life and one you can continue until you choose to stop. You can work part time only or build up a busy practice and develop in to a full time occupation with earnings increasing with the growth of the practice.

Choosing the right Homeopathic Course – Having decided you feel you have an interest in studying homeopathy, the next question is which course should you choose? The following information will serve as a good starting point and lead you to making the right choice the first time.

With so many different courses available – part time, full time, correspondence courses, academic or vocational, university courses, and courses run by private colleges – it’s hard to know which one will be right for you. Please be clear that each course is unique in its leadership, approach, philosophy, teaching standards and resources. No one course is the same as another!

What’s right for you?

Just as in homeopathy we give an individual prescription to match each patient’s needs, so in pursuing your homeopathic education you should find a course that meets your needs. If you’re considering studying homeopathy, it’s important to bear in mind that the provision of homeopathic training in the UK covers a broad spectrum. The main qualification courses offer is either a licentiate diploma or a degree in homeopathy.

Students from overseas who are intending to study in the UK should first check what qualifications for practice are required in their own countries, if they are considering returning home to practice after their training. (Check out the www.Boiron.com website to help with this).

Why so many people get it wrong.

Our experience is that students make choices that are based on secondary factors rather than primary factors that lead them to get it wrong. The problem is people think all colleges are basically the same and therefore base their decisions on secondary factors such as location, venue, reputation, cost, individual tutors, friends etc.

Remember that choosing the wrong college and having to change can be expensive – training to be a homeopath can cost in excess of £10,000 and wasting a year on the wrong course will not only demotivate you but be expensive as well.

Over the last 15 years I have spent time supporting many women through the menopause with excellent results so it’s been interesting reaching this milestone myself. I see the menopause and all that goes with it as new and exciting phase in my life. The positive side is no more planning holidays around my periods and the wonderful freedom to not having them – the negatives fade into insignificance and I could go on and on about the positives.

Maybe I am lucky as a lot of my own patients have more of a problem with this stage in their life. I feel the investment I have made in my own healing over the last 15 years has paid dividends; the changes to diet exercise, detoxing; clearing out synthetic hormones; rebalancing the endocrine system etc, which started in my mid 30s. I believe health is an investment which starts with learning to listen to the feedback our bodies give us and acknowledging what usually makes us ill is lifestyles that don’t work for us. Sadly modern medicine has reduced everything down to chemical imbalances that are suppressed by more chemicals that override delicate systems thus further adding to our long-term problems. The payback for this comes back in real terms 10 years later with unbearable symptoms leading to more drug-based suppression and deepening ill health.

So what is the menopause? It’s one of the natural stages in a woman’s life in which the body adapts gradually to the changes of ovarian decline. It is not a disease but a natural transition, just like starting the menstrual cycle during puberty. Instead of gearing up for pregnancy and childbirth, the reproductive system is gradually winding down. As we age, the ovaries will produce less and less oestrogen until they produce so little oestrogen that menstruating ceases altogether – usually in the early 50s.

The symptoms experienced during the menopause are a result of the pituitaries attempt to stimulate the ovaries back into normal function. At this point the adrenals are supposed to take over the role of the declining ovaries; however, modern lifestyles often result in already exhausted adrenals and an overburdened liver. So it becomes difficult to make this change with ease.

The loss of natural true hormones can lead to all kinds of symptoms such as decreased immune response, decreased adrenal response, sleep disorders, peptic ulcers, depression, anxiety, panic, rage learning disorders, and hormonal disorders. It is these symptoms which make many women turn to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

However, modern drug-based treatment often adds to the problems and there are more natural ways of easing through this stage in a woman’s life.

As women make the transition through the menopause, they may notice that it happens in three phases.

The first stage usually occurs around two to eight years before the menopause and lasts until a year after the last menstrual period. During this time, the production of oestrogen gradually decreases, and many women experience any number of physical changes, including irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats and PMS-like mood swings. Some women say they feel achy all over. Others may feel tired and have difficulty concentrating or remembering things. Additional symptoms might include insomnia, anxiety, headaches, sleep disturbances, heart palpitations, and vaginal dryness, which can lead to pain or discomfort during intercourse. But some women may not experience any symptoms at all.

The second stage is when your ovaries produce so little oestrogen that the menstrual periods cease altogether. Women reach this stage after they have gone 12 consecutive months without having a period. The average age of the menopause is 51 years, but it’s perfectly normal for the menopause to occur anywhere from the early forties to mid-fifties. If women smoke, they can expect to start the menopause about two years earlier than average.

The third stage is post-menopause – which refers to the time following the menopause which can for some women be up to 25 years or more. By this time, the hot flashes, mood swings, and other physical discomforts of the menopause have usually subsided. But the lower oestrogen levels after menopause increase a woman’s susceptibility to osteoporosis.

Every woman is different, and each makes the transition through menopause in a unique way. Some breeze through menopause with few or no symptoms; others – up to 75 percent – may struggle with hot flashes or other discomforts.

From a homeopathic perspective it is important to establish the underlying causes of why women are struggling through the menopause with all kinds of distressing symptoms. Some the main causes can be found in the following:

diet

stress

shock

synthetic oestrogens and progesterone.

Homeopathy along with diet, nutrition and herbs can rebalance the female hormonal system which is a delicate system that is profoundly affected by the use of synthetic oestrogens and progesterone (as found in contraceptive pills and HRT).

A practically trained homeopath will use a structured, systematic and non-invasive approach which supports the natural self-healing process to rebalance the endocrine system so that symptoms ease and fade away.

Some key homeopathic remedies that I have found very useful in practice are:

Cimicifuga for patients who feels sad and gloomy as if a dark cloud hung over their head, with a lot of sighing and hot flushes.

Sepia is an excellent remedy for those women who have been on HRT or the pill for many years and are now finding the transition through the menopause difficult. They are exhausted and weak with a dragging baring down sensation as if the pelvic organs would fall out. Lots of hot flushes and dryness of the vagina.

Oophorinum for hot flushes during the menopause.

I have also found that herbal supplements can be supportive to a homeopathic program. Some examples are:

Agnus castus (Chaste Tree) which is an excellent herb for menopausal symptoms, PMS, endometriosis, etc.

Cimicifuga racemosa (Black Cohosh) which equalizes the circulation and reduces HBP and treats all kinds of menstrual and menopausal problems. It reduces the symptoms of hot flushes and depression.

Sarsaparilla (Similax ornate) which is used as a glandular balancer and also a blood purifier.

The herbs can be used on an organ level to purify the system and support the indicated homeopathic remedies.
